Interviews: R.E.M. Stay Sunny About Album

By Beverley Lyons and Lee-Ann Fullerton

R.E.M. bass player Mike Mills says he’s proud of the band’s latest album, despite it receiving lukewarm reviews on its release. Mills claims he’s had nothing but positive feedback about Around The Sun, which came out last week. He told the Razz: “You never know how these things are going to be received. You can never tell. ‘I feel very confident about this record.’ And generally, what I’ve got from people before now, unless they’re all lying to me, would suggest that the confidence is relatively merited.”

“I have a lot of pride in the end result of whatever we do. I think a lot of bands reach a level where they kind of coast. They do a record every four years, then do a tour.”

“But I just want to do this at as high a level as we possibly can for as long as we possibly can. And that means making great records and playing live.”
