Mike Mills Overload!

Don’t y’all love this title? winking I certainly love days like this when I can post several Mike Mills-related news at once.

Let’s start with the final part of the interview from Italian Rolling Stone; it was published online and our own Dol has already translated it! I have merged it with her previous translation, so you can read the entire interview here. Thanks, Dol!

Next, Huffington Post has just published a brilliant new interview with Mike Mills – thanks Dol for the heads-up! This is the third time in as many weeks that he has strongly suggested that he will work on his solo album sometime in the near future. thumbs up Now let’s just hope that his perfectionism won’t get the better of him, and that he won’t keep us waiting for too long… Come on Mike, you can do it!

I will add these recent interviews to our Press Archive asap, and meanwhile I’ve been updating the galleries. I have added more high-res promotional photos taken by the ever so talented Anton Corbijn to our 2009-2010 Gallery. And Kirsten has found a bunch of photos and a video from the Sunset Session media event that took place between 17 and 20 February 2011 in San Diego, CA. As you all know, Mike Mills hosted a meet-and-greet and a listening party. See the photos in our brand new 2011 Gallery, and I’ve also added the video to our Youtube channel. Thanks, Kirsten!

Finally, the official video for “Oh My Heart” has just been released via IFC; and that’s all I’m gonna say about it. You may watch it below. Thanks Auctioneer for the tip!

Let’s continue our discussion re: Mike’s solo album here!

I’d love him to make a really ballsy record, I don’t want it to be too mellow – no Reveal Part 2 please!
Oh and I don’t want an instrumental record – he’s a great singer and he should sing!
And last but not least, I want Mr Bill Berry as his special guest star! I want them to collaborate like the post-Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr. big grin

On a completely unrelated note, I love Mike’s salt’n'pepper hair! Hope he’s ditched the bottle-blonde look for good.

  2. Auctioneer Says:

You know Ivana, I think your wishes will be granted on all three of those points. Mike and Bill were good friends pre-R.E.M., so the likelihood of their collaboration is pretty good. Mike’s not one to skimp when it comes to rock songs (just think of all the sweet covers you’ve posted on MMT!), and he sings lead fairly often on those records.

Personally, if he was to do a covers album, I’d like to see some Steppenwolf (“Born to Be Wild” ) and maybe even The Modern Lovers (“Roadrunner” ). I agree with Dol – Simon and Garfunkel would be great! happy Mike and Robin Hitchcock actually played “Mrs Robinson” once… I have it in my massive collection somewhere! big grin

    Yours truly,

P.S. His hair is lookin’ good! tongue Kinda feels like he’s mellowed somewhat.

  3. Ivana Says:

I wouldn’t want Mike to do a covers-only record. One or two covers would be fine, but the rest of it should be his own songs. I bet he has amassed lots of material over the years that wasn’t deemed suitable for R.E.M. Gotta mention George Harrison once again – as soon as The Beatles finally parted ways, he released a triple-LP of his own material! (All Things Must Pass, 1970)

Of course, Mike, you don’t have to do a triple album – a normal CD will do just fine. winking

  4. Kirsten Says:

WOW, thanks so much Dol for another translation!!! thumbs up thumbs up

Just quick, because I’m so excited that the interview with Mike on Streetdate is now online!! drooling

    Heeeeeere: big grin

  5. Ivana Says:

Oooooh, fantastic! I think I’ll embed the clips directly from Streetdate for now, and after a few weeks have passed I’ll add them to our Youtube channel. winking

  6. Linda Says:

HMMMM New Mikey Mills solo project…… Texarkana, Rockville, The Eagle, Gifts of the Fathers, Love is All Around You, and a whacking great bunch of new songs. A couple of rockers, but some acoustic stuff , with the man himself, on keyboards as well. DREAMYday dreaming

  7. Auctioneer Says:

Excellent selection there Linda! A studio recording of “The Eagle” would be great. Also, that version Mike did of “Wendell Gee” during the same concert was super too.

I’d pay good money just to have Mike come round to my house so we could play R.E.M. songs all day. big grin

  8. Kirsten Says:

Hehehe, not only you Auctioneer, not only you… big grin big grin big grin

  9. Linda Says:

I would just sit and listen, and gaze dreamily at the manwinking
