Absolutely gorgeous!! I love the second half of the album, especially AAAA! thumbs up

  2. Linda Says:

Okay….Brilliant, seamless, sooo upliftinghappy I loved the way everything flowed so beautifully and the theme throughout. Musically…….AWESOMEhappy Wonderful guitar god stuff, soaring harmonies( of course)Great rocking tunes, can’t get much better than this !!!!!!!! My only wish would have been for more of Stipey’s beautiful melodies, but then again, the songs don’t really lend themselves to that. We had hints of that in me and Marlon Brando…..the pipes are STILL there nerdd

This was definitely not an album simply made for the $$$$ winking

    Overall………LOVE love struck

  3. Auctioneer Says:

That… was… AWESOME! Too bad I spent most of my time trying to type a review of it as fast as I could, my enjoyment waned slightly because of it. But hey, take a look if you want (1,000 words surprise ):

    http://listentotheauctioneer.blogspot.com/2011/03/first-impressions-of-collapse-into-now.html

Our wishes have been granted. R.E.M. is back for good.

    Yours truly,
    Auctioneer

  4. Ivana Says:

    Excellent review Auctioneer!

  5. Linda Says:

Well done Auctioneer! When I get my copy, I am going to go back and listen, with your review in front of me so I can hone in on the things I missed just reveling in the momenthappy Great review indeed.thumbs up

  6. Arek Says:

I wasn’t listening the album yesterday. I’m waiting to the release date. it is Friday, 4th March here in Poland. Only 2 days for wait! I’m an old school folk???

  7. Linda Says:

Nothing wrong with that Arekhappy I am sure you are going to love it. I really liked “Walk It Back.” VERY different from what the boys usually do. It has a very “bluesy” feel.

  8. Linda Says:

By the way, everyone. NPR radio has the entire album up today only, on “First Listen”. A second chance to hear it!!!!!big grin

  9. Linda Says:

By the way, I meant WIB has a “gospel” sound, rather than a bluesy one. And the NPR website says the album will be on First Listen until it’s release March 8th ( that’s my interpretation…..EVEN BETTER!!!!!!! Sorry to b so disjointed this a.m. I haven’t had my coffee yetsad

  10. Arek Says:

Thanks Linda. Oh My weak will! The pressure was to High. I”ve just listened to this record once! Pretty damned good. The best since Automatic, or maybe since Hi-Fi? What do you guys think?
“Blue” is my favourite (or favorite???, I don’t know?)

  11. Kirsten Says:

Don’t worry Arek, not everyone has the chance to listen to an internet stream in the middle of the day winking
I have to study for my exams all day, and it’s going to be a really difficult one next Tuesday, so I don’t allow myself to get distracted winking However, I took some time yesterday night to continue the translation for you all happy Alas, there was no chance for me to get the complete thing done, my time is limited and it is a LOT of text…

As for CIN, I’ll buy the album on Tuesday after the exam to reward myself and then listen to it in peace and quiet winking

  12. Arek Says:

OH, And now we’re begining our weekend with REM here in Poland on Polish Radio Program 3. It is 15 minutes after 3 p.m and they’re playing ALL THE BEST!

  13. Ivana Says:

Hi folks! I’m putting finishing touches to the Stipe interview, I’ll upload it in a few minutes. Btw weren’t they supposed to release the new video for Uberlin today?

  14. SiriusXM Harpreet Says:

  15. Linda Says:

Arek…of course you had to listenhappy We have been patiently waiting so long for this. Kirsten…it will be a great reward for you when you complete your exam. YAY!!!! I just finished my second listen on NPR and posted a more complete review/comment:

Collapse Into Now!!!!At first listen, I was HAPPY. At second listen, I was Ecstatic! I think this is a brilliant album. There are so many layers to discover( no pun intended) and each time I listen, I find more to explore, both musically and lyrically. The whole album flows seamlessly and is so uplifting. To me there are many classic R.E.M moments, with Peter’s guitar and mandolin, Mike’s great bass lines and piano and organ, and some of Michael’s cryptic lyrics and beautiful vocals, but they have stepped beyond that and moved to a new and fresh sound. I do miss the inclusion of some of Michael’s more beautiful melodies, but the harmonies with Vedder and McCaughey and gang, are stunning. Using Discoverer as the opening track gives us a sense of what is to come…the lyrics are all geared to self-discovery, culminating with the powerful “Blue”…”This is my time.” “I want it all.” Reprising “Discoverer” with a slow progression to the full power of the song,is nothing short of brilliant! One of my favourite surprises is ” Walk It Back.” Classic R.E.M lyrically and vocally, simple and understated, but with a distinctive “gospel” feel. LOVELY.

I kind of rave about the album….I really haven’t found anything to dislike, except maybe, the usual complaint( too much reverb on Michael’s vocals in some songs).

  16. Kirsten Says:

    P.S.:
I WANT THE BAND and an atmospheric and not some strange art experiment that has nothing to do with and ignores the song.
The video is supposed to support and cater to the song, to dwell on the song. This does neither.

Sorry, Michael – it’s not my thing so let it go!

  17. Kirsten Says:

BTW, if my comment above seems to be out of context: the comment I posted before that one “is awaiting moderation” because of three links winking

  18. Dol Says:

I’m with you Kirsten. Uberlin video is boring, stupid, meaningless. If the director’s boyfriend wanted to appear in an R.E.M. video could come up with something more interesting.
WTF! Aftermath deserves a Grammy for best video in comparison.
I think the lyric video is more original!

  19. Auctioneer Says:

“Around the Sun” was a pretty dull album, but at least the music videos are good. I know R.E.M. always tries to be ‘alternative’, but when it comes to videos mainstream is the only thing I like. “This Film is On” was a great selection of videos, and even the earlier stuff (like “Wolves, Lower”winking was quite cool. Uberlin… isn’t. sad Even just showing some Berlin cityscapes would be better than this!

Hey, that gives me an idea… happy

  20. Kirsten Says:

OK now, this was my comment above the one starting with “P.S.”…

    Lovely review Linda!!

Yes, the video for Überlin is availble for stream today via various (local) websites.

    For viewers within Germany:
    http:// http://www.berlin.de/ tickets/rock-pop-jazz/rem-uberlin-video-premiere/

    Norway: http:// http://www.vgtv.no/ #id=37857

    Spain: http:// http://www.rtve.es/ mediateca/videos/20110302/videoclip-uberlin-nuevo-rem/1033876.shtml

Here’s what I think about the Überlin video:

So far I’m not really a fan of these (as Michael Stipe calls them) “art films” serving as music videos for the new R.E.M. songs…

Überlin: No band members in the video, just some dude walking through the streets making strange moves (jumping? dancing?).
In no way does this do the song any justice, it kind of destroys the song’s atmosphere…

    —–

Dol, yes, I also love the Überlin lyrics video, but now the “real” video… oh well.
So just as it was the case with the official Mine Smell Like Honey video, I’m gonna stick with the lyrics video.

So Auctioneer, can we expect a hand-made good and fitting video for Überlin from you? big grin

  22. Kirsten Says:

Umm, sorry for the spam… sad
Seems I have some problems here with commenting big grin

  23. Ivana Says:

Here I am, apologies for the delay! I’m uploading everything now, and Dol’s translation will explain Michael’s motivation for releasing these dumbass videos. straight face

  24. Kirsten Says:

Michael also explains a little what it’s all about with these strange videos in the new translation part of the German Rolling Stone interview I posted.

Well, he wanted to do little “art films” and not conventional music videos, and since his bandmates obviously are fine with that and/or don’t care about the videos to their songs, this is what we get… whether we like it or not… straight face

  25. Arek Says:

Oh yeah, Michael Stipe and his art videos. I don’t think the videos from Around the Sun were good! Aftermath was horibble, Leaving NY was fine, but Michael was the main star with Peter and Mike as “special appearance”. I don’t like these type of videos. Last good videos were from Reveal and it was long time ago.

  26. Kirsten Says:

Please don’t forget the video for “Bad Day” from 2003, that one was EPIC! May be their best ever, at least it’s my absolute favorite big grin

  27. Arek Says:

yeah that’s true, Bad Day was brilliant. I forgot about it. I rally do love The Great Beyond. That was the times!!!

  28. Linda Says:

I will reserve judgment until I am able to see the “art films.” As a bit of an ‘artsy-fart” ( as my husband calls me), I may actually enjoy themwinking I did get a chuckle out of MSLH, though I do understand that most fans don’t want to see that kind of presentation. It probably won’t win them any new fans (unless they are college film students????).

  29. Linda Says:

Arek…I actually like Aftermathlaughing Mike in black velvet and Peter in pyjamas is worth seeing alonewinking I loved the video for “All the Way to Reno” with the kids…so much fun! I think the best “artsy” videos were “Low” and “I’ll Take the Rain.” Nary a band member in sight in “Low”, but I love the idea, and cinematography that created live action, then stills again, using paintings..I just wanted to keep watching, and the dark mood of the song was reflected in the lighting.I found myself smiling, as I watched the journey of the little cartoon character in “I’ll Take the Rain.” I guess my faves of the “band-centred” videos are “Find the River”, “Bang and Blame” , “Near Wild Heaven” and of course “Bittersweet Me”. You have to admit…the guys have never made traditional videosbig grin

  30. Arek Says:

Linda, my wife also loves I’ll Take The Rain video. She says that it’s beautiful ’cause of that story about this doggy and the desk which help that dog and lost a wheel, or something. Helping, the desk losing its own strengh, losing a little life to help. Once she had a tear in her eye watching this… So You’re right, it’s beautiful and no band members don’t bother me at all.

  31. Linda Says:

Heads up everyone….a new video for It Happened Tody has been released. I love it….especially the remix of the song, that fir the mood of the story beautifully.

    ENJOYbig grin

  32. Linda Says:

Arek…your wife has great taste and I love to hear that others find the same beauty that I see in a clip.happy The video indeed is very moving.

Sorry about the spelling in my previous post. I was so excited to get the news to all of you that my fingers just couldn’t work quickly enoughdoh
