Mike Mills Talks! – UPDATE No 2

UPDATE: As our friend Auctioneer has noticed, my piano version of “Discoverer” is now featured on REMHQ.com!!! This is the second time I’ve been honoured like this, and I’m immensely grateful to the band and everyone at the headquarters, especially Mr David Bell! R.E.M. have been my musical heroes since I was 13, and this is really a huge honour for me. Love ya guys!!! kiss

UPDATE 2: And here’s more squeeworthy stuff – a special video interview with the band, released via several websites, including MSN, Spinner, etc. Enjoy!!

Several news pieces this morning! First of all, Jerry Rubino has just posted a video snippet from an interview with our own Mike Mills on Last.fm. This is just a teaser, and the entire thing will be posted on 8 March on Street Date.

Next, many thanks to Dol for letting us know that Mike is scheduled to perform again with Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter and the rest of the gang for another Big Star Third/Sister Lovers tribute show. This time the gig takes place in New York on 26 March, and they’ll be joined by Matthew Sweet, M. Ward (She and Him, Tired Pony), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and many others! This is truly a fantastic lineup, shame that New York is so far away for most of us. However, as usual, I will have some friends there, so get ready for more exclusive photos and stories! Read more about this event here and here.

Finally, here’s the first proper review of R.E.M.’s new album Collapse Into Now, courtesy of SPIN. The new album gets 8 out of 10 stars, and the critic (Josh Modell) asserts that “It sounds every molecule like R.E.M., which thankfully means no alarms and no detours.” Ditto!

  1. Ivana Says:

Looks like Mikey’s growing his hair out. thumbs up

  2. Dol Says:

Soon the curls will be ready for the tour! Bravo Mike, go on like this!
p.s. Welcome back to his favorite shirt tongue

  3. Kirsten Says:

Ay caramba, they keep me on tenterhooks with the interview till March 8th? Booh! big grin

Yay, he let his hair grow again – love it now, didn’t like how it was in the Hansa Studios Berlin fotos and videos. The long hair just looks great on him.

Also, I think he should get another pair of glasses, that would have absolute priority over Michael losing the beard batting eyelashes The red thick-rimmed ones don’t really flatter his face IMHO winking

And the shirt, hehe, yeah, it looks very familiar big grin

BTW, is Ira Kaplan related to Ethan Kaplan?

P.S.: Ivana, check your mail, I send you some Youtube links, among them a new upload of a Mike interview on the poolside in Australia from 1989! And also a cute close-up pic of him is attached in the mail winking

  4. Ivana Says:

    Thanks dear!! *off to check*

I’ve promised to tidy up the video interviews page a long time ago, apologies for the delay… a 24-hour day is way too short for me. hurry up

As for Ira Kaplan, I don’t think he and Ethank are related… Yo La Tengo are from New Jersey, and Ethan is from California, right?

  5. Auctioneer Says:

Totally agree – Mike’s Lennon glasses (like the ones he’s wearing at the page header) were much nicer than what he’s wearing now IMHO. Obviously though, if I met him that would be the last thing to leave my lips! happy

Kinda liked the hair though… reminded me of the look he had in the 80s before he grew it long. I wonder why he switched to blonde?

As for Ira Kaplan, I’m not sure. Could be a brother, maybe? He looks about Ethan’s age, but I’m a terrible judge of that stuff! big grin

    Yours truly,
    Auctioneer

  6. Kirsten Says:

Yeah, I too wish that the day would have more hours… time out
Oh well, gotta put up with what we have, which is why I never get nearly all the stuff done I want to do sad

Sorry, I could’ve posted the Youtube link for everyone to share – here it is, Mike at the poolside 1989:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvpeLTBhNZU

And for the Bittorrent users of us, there are two great new torrents out on Dime:

    R.E.M – July 12th 2008 – Oxegen Festival, Naas, Ireland – 1080i
    http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=343963
–> Only very few songs, but Full-HD!!

REM & Editors – 2008-09-09 Helsinki (PAL) DVD
    http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=343457
–> Only snippets of songs, filmed from the audience, but including Mike singing Rockville day dreaming

As for his hair color, hehe, spontaneously two things come to my mind:
    1) blondes have more fun
    2) blondes are considered sexier
    3) it’s nearer to his original hair color of today (which would be… completely gray big grin ) –> speaking from a colorist’s perspective, a) it’s easier as it doesn’t need to be retouched as often cause you don’t see the roots as clearly as you would if you colored it darker, plus b) color fading isn’t as easily noticed as well. And we all know, heterosexual men are lazy groomers laughing
    4) blondes have more fun, and blonde is sexy big grin
    5) he knows that platinum blonde is my favorite hair color, that’s why he wears it – just for me big grin big grin big grin

And as for the glasses, I liked the ones best he wore ca. 1998/1999, and similar models in the early noughties, although or just because they look pretty ordinary. They suit his youthful face, make him look cute.
    See this pic from 1998:

Ummm, I think we need a discussion board or forum here big grin

  7. Kirsten Says:

Hm, the server swallowed parts of my comment again.
Pic link of Mike in 1998:

    happy

  8. Auctioneer Says:

Aw, ain’t he cute! tongue What was this taken from?

  9. Kirsten Says:

The pic is from an interview in the course of their concert on 2nd November 1998 in Hamburg happy

Big sorry for the confusion with the spam Auctioneer, my comment was referring to a spam post that has already been deleted (see my comment there)! Sorry again!

  10. Ivana Says:

Hiya folks! It’s been a very long day (in fact week) at work. yawn
I’ve cleaned up spam… huh I do have this antispam filter plugin activated, but apparently it cannot catch everything. On the other hand, that’s the reason why some of Kirsten’s comments end up in the spam folder – the plugin identifies every comment containing multiple links as “suspicious”. rolling eyes

Mr Auctioneer, I’ve received your email, thanks a million! I’ll reply first thing in the morning!

*off to collapse into now* sleepy

  11. Dol Says:

The only anecdote I have about his hair is: someone (a waiter in Hollywood) told him he was fine and looks like an actor. (Don’t ask me where I read it because I don’t remember)

  12. Auctioneer Says:

Thanks Ivana! This should be an interesting project. happy No rush to reply – I’ve got exams all day tomorrow, so I won’t be back until early evening.

Dol, you have opened my eyes… Mike does look like an actor! Perhaps he should do some – Art Garfunkel had nice hair, and he was in loads of films and TV shows after Simon and Garfunkel. winking

  13. Dol Says:

Lol Auctioneer! I remember perfectly my beloved Art in Boxing Helena, as Mike in Boston Legal. You did a great comparison.

  14. Linda Says:

Well Mike has that eternal “youthful” look. A darling man who will always look younger than his years. I like the long locks, blonde curls, and the round glasses…a complete cutie piesigh

  15. Auctioneer Says:

OMG Ivana!!! Your cover of “Discoverer” just made the news at R.E.M. HQ! Well done! big grin

  16. Ivana Says:

    SQUEEEEE!!!!! happy happy happy happy

  17. Auctioneer Says:

I swear, I refreshed the website’s page literally minutes after I went on, and… POOF! There it was. happy

It really is a beautiful rendition – I’m not surprised it made it onto the weekly roundup. Each time you release a cover, it just gets better and better! big grin

  18. Ivana Says:

Now we should all be even more motivated and inspired to pursue our project together!! Btw I’m still stuck in the library, can’t access my webmiss email and/or my audio software, that’s why I haven’t responded yet, but I haven’t forgotten! Heh, it’s not much fun working on a Friday night… but this surely made my day!!!

  19. Auctioneer Says:

Don’t worry about it! This news has made my day too – I can’t wait to get cracking on some more R.E.M. covers in the very near future. I realise this is way far in advance, considering we haven’t finished the first one yet, but I think it would be cool if we played a violin/piano only cover next time… I’ve never attempted to play an R.E.M. song on the violin, but who knows? The staff at HQ like alternative-sounding covers. You could go for a hat trick of appearances on their web site! tongue

And you know what else? I think it’s pretty likely that at least one or more of the band have seen your videos! Michael maintains a constant web presence, and he’s in contact with Mike and Peter a lot, so I believe that it’s pretty safe to say that they’ve seen your covers via R.E.M. HQ. Just hypothesising, but I would bet good money on it! big grin

  20. Kirsten Says:

Congrats Ivana!!! thumbs up big grin<

Aww, I SOOOO want to be in the cover band with you guys! Damn, I wish I could play at the required level already broken heart
This encourages me to practice as hard as I can!! rock on

BTW Auctioneer, you'll get an email from me later winking

  21. Kirsten Says:

Part of my comment swallowed again…

Congrats Ivana!!! thumbs up big grin<

  22. Kirsten Says:

Nope, won’t let me post one line… Oh computers… frustrated

Okay, I’ll try without the smiley:

    Congrats Ivana!!! party [party smiley]
Well, what can I say? Honor to whom honor is due! [big hug smiley]

  23. Kirsten Says:

Is the interview on Spinner the same as this one from an Italian site?:

    http://rockol.it/news-212590/R.E.M.,-esclusiva-Rockol–guarda-il-video-del-%27making-of%27-di-%27Collapse-into-now%27

I am bummed that I cannot view either video… frustrated

But thanks to RemFan.it I was able to download the one from rockol.it – THANKS A BILLION!!! thumbs up

  24. Ivana Says:

I guess it’s the same video, it’s on MSN as well. http://music.msn.com/video/music/?g=1dee25be-dc8c-4b40-99d8-a561a46a5bd7&icid=MUSIC1&GT1=MUSIC1

  25. Ivana Says:

And here’s an extract from “That Someone Is You”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4t1McgVWRM&feature=youtube_gdata

  26. Auctioneer Says:

I think that may be the whole song, actually. I seem to recall a journalist saying that it would make a great single, if only it weren’t 1:41 in length. tongue

  27. Kirsten Says:

Hey, the MSN link works happy
    Thanks for the links winking

Eh, only 1:41 long? Oh… big grin

  28. Elena Says:

Bravo, Ivana, the video is great (but I’ve told you that already)!! happy I like it better on piano, actually, ’cause it doesn’t sound ‘uberproduced’ like the original

  29. Remmo Says:

First of all: Ivana, your version of Discoverer is amazing, I think it was an hard work to rearrange it for the Piano, Bravissima!!!
    2) Kirsten, You’re welcome happy
    3) I’m definitely in Love with “All the best”, it’s AMAZING, I didn’t recognize no R.E.M. song like that, it’s really wonderful!!! big grin

  30. Auctioneer Says:

Kirsten, got your e-mail and sent a reply. Thank you once again for the Unplugged show! big grin

  31. Kirsten Says:

Aaah guys, you’re all so great!
Thanks again Remmo, and you’re very welcome Auctioneer!! winking

I just read that there’s gonna be a BIG 12 pages R.E.M. special in the next German issue of Rolling Stone magazine *yaaaaay*
The mag will be out Feb 24th – well, get prepared for some NICE scans! happy

  32. Ivana Says:

Yay Kirsten!!! big hug love struck big grin thumbs up

  33. Kirsten Says:

big hug right back atcha winking
If there's any chance for me to get some peace and quiet time, I might be doing a partial or even whole translation of the article winking

  34. Auctioneer Says:

Ooh, a translation! That would be awesome. happy It’s about time R.E.M. got a feature as big as the one they’re getting now – I can’t remember the last time they were publicised this much. 1991, perhaps? In any event, great news.

Thanks for the e-mail, Ivana – I’m looking forward to hearing the piano part when you finish it. happy Can’t say I’m looking forward to life as an adult, though – seems way too hectic for my tastes! tongue

  35. Dol Says:

#Ivana: Congratulation for your presence in REMHQ! I have not watched your video (you know, until the 8th March it’s all banned), but I’m sure it’s great like all the others!

#Kirsten: Thanks for your time! It’s very appreciated happy

  36. Auctioneer Says:

I wish I had done what you’re currently doing, Dol – the huge surprise of hearing all these brilliant new songs is going to be mind-blowing for you!

As I’m sure you’re aware (and have been told numerous times from the rest of us tongue ), there are some cracking tunes on “Collapse Into Now”. It must be hard to stay away from all this new content, though…

  37. Ivana Says:

    Thanks Dol! love struck

  38. Dol Says:

#Auctioneer: Yes, sometimes it’s really hard, especially when you read some great review. But it’s a ritual I perform for each album. All work done by them is worth waiting a few days to be able to hear in its entirety. In a dark room. Alone.
