Christmas Gripping

Phew, I’m gone for a few days (went to London to discuss some job prospects), and upon return there’s a huge load of R.E.M. and Mike Mills news waiting to be posted! Oh well I ain’t complainin’. happy First of all, R.E.M. have released their latest Christmas fanclub single. As usual, Michael Stipe is not involved, however the rest of the band is there, including the magnificent Mr Bill Berry behind the kit, and of course Scott McCaughey. (Speaking of whom: next year it will be 17 years since Scott joined R.E.M., which means that he will equal Bill Berry’s tenure with the band!)

The single contains two tracks: the first is the cover of Darlene Love’s 1963 hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. Mike is in charge of lead vocals – yay! The second track is a sneak preview of Collapse Into Now. It is entitled “IHT>U>EDIYTW (Dubmix),” which is a mashup of early mixes of instrumental segments from three of the new tracks, presumably “It Happened Today,” “Uberlin,” and “Every Day Is Yours to Win.” Download these tracks below (right-click and Save As):

“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (2.78 MB)

“IHT_U_EDIYTW (Dubmix)” (3.23 MB)

Speaking of “It Happened Today”, several sources are suggesting that this song, a collaboration with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, will be the first single off Collapse Into Now; even better, it will be released on 20 December 2010! We’ll keep you updated whether this date is accurate.

Whilst preparing for the upcoming publicity rounds, R.E.M. have released brand new photos taken by the legendary Anton Corbijn. The boys look great!

UPDATE: I’ve just uploaded HQ photos to our Gallery.

In other news, these past two days Mike Mills and a host of friends have paid tribute to Big Star’s legendary third album Third/Sister Lovers. Several reports (with great photos) have already surfaced online, so read them all below:

BTW let’s make a video with the newest Xmas single to put on Youtube! If you guys have favourite photos of Mike that you would like me to add to the video, please send them to webmiss@mikemillsfan.com
Any photos will do – the funnier, the better! Just make sure they’re at least 600×400 pixels.
