As you may remember, two months ago we informed you that a documentary film would be made about the legendary Memphis club Antenna, and that Mike Mills was one of the musicians interviewed for the project by Laura Jean Hocking. Now, the good news is that the project is shaping up nicely, and the director Chris McCoy and his collaborators have released the first lengthy trailer online (more on this later). The bad news is that, just like a majority of independently financed projects, this one will come to an abrupt halt unless more funds are raised. This is where we can step in to help: the authors have set up an online fundraising campaign (similar to the one that a few weeks ago successfully raised cash to wrap the Alex Chilton documentary). So, please go here to learn more about the documentary and watch the exclusive trailer, which features everyone from the very young Robert Smith of The Cure to Curt Kirkwood of The Meat Puppets as he is today. And about 5 minutes into the trailer you’ll see and hear R.E.M.’s own Mike Mills say that it was Memphis and especially the Antenna club that kept them fed in the early 1980s.
Should you find this documentary worth supporting, you’ll be able to pledge some money via the page linked above (and receive some cool exclusive merchandise as a reward). The filmmakers’ goal is to raise 6000 dollars by Saturday 21 August 2010, and so far they’ve raised almost 2000 bucks. They welcome any contribution, starting from just $5.
Oh, and here’s an interview with the director Chris McCoy, where you’ll find more information about the project.
